Below is a list of what you should do to implement Legal Monster. You can read the longer form below, but if you know what you are doing just jump in, it's easy!
Consent is an agreement to a set of terms that you have defined. A user gives consent first time you collect personally identifiable information data (PII data). This could be when a user signs up for your service, buys something on your website or subscribes to a newsletter. According to different international privacy laws you are not allowed to collect or store any PII data without prior consent.
What is defined as personally identifiable information data is a bit different from country to country, but if you are in doubt ask yourself: "Would I be able to identify the user from this datapoint or a combination of the data I have on a person?". If your answer is "Yes", then there is a good chance it is PII data.
Here is a list of some datapoints that are definitely considered PII data, but remember that it is not limited to this list:
Social security number
Driver’s license number
Credit card numbers
Date of birth
Log in details
Other data that, when combined, could identify a user might include:
First or last name
Country, state, city, postcode
Non-specific age (e.g. 30-40 instead of 30)
Job position and workplace
If you collect any of the above information, you need to collect consent in a way that is compliant with the local law of where you user is located, not only the law of where your company is located.
Our consent collection methods will help you collect consent from your users in a compliant and easy way that don't hurt your conversion rates or put you at legal risk.
When a new user signs up for your service you need to collect consent from them. If your users sign up on your website we have developed an easy-to-integrate widget that will help you collect consent from your users.
Our widget will ask for the right type of consent based on the user's location. This will keep your conversion rate has high as possible (no need to ask for consent when in-active consent is enough).
You can also use our Zapier integration to collect consent, this will allow you to integrate Legal Monster with tools like Hubspot or Typeform in a matter of minutes.
If your users sign up through an app, or for another reason you cannot use our signup widget, you can also use our API to save consents in Legal Monster. We would love to help you collect consent in a good way through our API, just reach out on firstname.lastname@example.org and we will help you.
At some point you will have to update your terms, maybe you start to use a new sub-processor (like Legal Monster, Google Analytics or other tools) or you have to change other rights in any of your documents.
Most updates to your terms require that you as a minimum inform your users about the update, other updates require that you collect specific consent to that new revision.
Our tracker widget makes it easy to inform and collect consent to new revisions from current users. You should integrate the tracker widget into all pages where the user is logged in to your website.
Our email information tool also helps you inform and collect consent, but can only be used if you have passed the email address of the user to us, so make sure to always to that, it will save you a lot of time later. You find the email tool simply by updating a document in Legal Monster.
With our document widget you can embed your terms directly on your website, like we have done here.
You can read more about embedding documents on your website in the section on our document widget.
We are always here to help you, if you have any questions just reach out to us on email@example.com or +45 71 99 99 63.
